A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. There are many forms of heroes, some are big and obvious, others are small and unidentifiable, but either way, they make a difference in the world. In fact, there are several different kinds of heroes represented in The Crucible. In Arthur Millers novel, the Crucible, the story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the Salem witch trials. During this time, several people, men and women alike, are falsely accused of being witches. John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth are both falsely accused of being witches, so both husband and wife need to fight for their lives. But it is a whores vengeance, and you must see it... (Miller 110). This is courageous of John Proctor to admit becau se although it will ruin his reputation, it will discredit Abigail in the court and ultimately save Elizabeths life. Finally, the last example of John Proctor being courageous is when he rips up his confession of being a warlock. In front of everyone, Proctor rips up his confession, already knowing the consequences, His breast heaving, his eyes staring, Proctor tears the paper and crumples it, and he is weeing in fury, but erect (Miller 144). This is courageous of John Proctor because he knows that when he rips up the confession that he is going to be hanged. John Proctor decides to rip it up anyway so that he could die an honorable man and not have his name tainted. All of these examples prove that John Proctor is a courageous man, making him a hero in the Crucible. A hero in the Crucible is John Proctor. John Proctor is a very courageous man who is not afraid to speak the truth no matter what. Even if others did not want to hear it or it will lead to serious consequences, John is an honest man. In the Crucible, several people lost their lifes, even a person like John Proctor, because of an ongoing lie that is perceived as the truth.
