Prevention of Falls in Acute Care Setting Research Paper
Prevention of Falls in Acute Care Setting - Research Paper Example Other factors leading to deterioration in acute care of falls include the strategies used by individuals, the first stages of patientsââ¬â¢ assessments, and continuing reassessment of the patients. The study on the approaches used in preventing injuries caused by falls includes assessment of individuals at high risks. In case of injuries, interviewing staff and members of the affected family is necessary for proper care. Factors leading to the problems In viewing the contributions to the problem, a number of factors cause increased cases of falls. Cognitive dysfunction is among the main risk factors. It refers to patients in severe confusion state known as delirium and those with existing cognitive injury known as dementia. Research shows at some point, over 30% of the inpatients have delirium 15% being the elderly (McCarter-Bayer et al., 2005). Dementia patients also suffer from a disease called Alzheimer and vascular dementia. Patients suffering from these infections have deteri orated strength and at risk of poly pharmacy. Impaired mobility is another falling risk factor resulting to body weakening. Low extreme mobility of the body causes the failure. This forces the patients to be in need for assistive devices. The use of medicines in an effort to counter the weaknesses in the body has side effects. These effects also contribute to risks in falls. Because of metabolic changes and hepatic impairment more prone to the elderly, they suffer more from the side effects of medicines. The living environment of the affected group causes falls leading to injuries. These may be due to the foreign materials in their living areas such as debris, poorly anchored floors and poor safety measures in the living rooms (Koh et al., 2007). Alternative solutions to the problem Falls minimization entails a number of precautions. The main precaution is to communicate the risk factors to respective authorities for undertaking of appropriate actions (Koh et al., 2007). By visual c ommunication, identifiers like posters, charts and signs showing risk areas are of considerable importance in preventing falls. It is necessary to inform all the people visiting a new environment and those living in a given area on the meaning of the risk signs placed at various points. The staff handling the patients requires the clarity of the fall status of the patients visiting any health care. In cases with affected patients, the people accompanying the patient have to identify and communicate a brief history of the patient before treatment. A number of interventions are a requirement for every patient. The patients must familiarize with the environment, be assisted whenever in need, for example, when going to the washrooms or by ensuring that walking belts are available at the bedside. In case of an emergency, communication devices should be in place and within the reach of the patients so that they can talk to nurses (Mezey et al., 2005). Course of action From literature, pre vention method of falls has a little impact on minimizing the rates of injuries (Mezey et al., 2005). To achieve best results, I recommend organizational support in ensuring prevention method, which has a high priority. This means that there is a need to encourage support from health care organizations than it was before. Studies show that best results are possible only with assistance across disciplines dealing with fall cases. The organization expected

Jane Eyre Essay Example for Free
Jane Eyre Essay How does Charlotte Bronte engage the readerââ¬â¢s sympathy for Jane Eyre in the opening two chapters of the novel? Charlotte Bronte the third daughter of Patrick and Maria Bronte, who was born in 1816 at Thornton, a moorland village near Bradford and was almost four when the family moved to Haworth. There, she, like the rest of her family was to spend almost all her life. The family liked privacy and since Mr. Bronte was busy with work and their mother was ill with cancer and died after only 18 months at Haworth, the children spent all their time together and were extremely close. The nurse who looked after Mrs. Bronte said that they were different from any children she had ever seen because they seemed so quiet and serious. When Charlotte was eight, Mr. Bronte sent her, with Maria, Elizabeth and later Emily, to a school for the daughters of clergy at Cowan Bridge. He thought education would be useful to his girls in the future, but their experiences were all too similar to those Charlotte Bronte gives Jane Eyre at Lowood. Maria and Elizabeth both died of tuberculosis, after less than a year, and Charlotte and Emily were taken away from the school and returned to studying at home with their father. Charlotte considered herself to be very plain, even ugly, and did not really hope for marriage, although she received three proposals. Like Jane Eyre, she was always sad that she was not more obviously attractive. Beauty was something she admired and longed for. At Roe Head, she worked hard, was successful and made several long life friends. She hated the job but when she was not teaching or marking books she had to work at mending the pupilsââ¬â¢ clothes. She became so depressed and ill that she had to leave. The next idea was that the girls should set up a school of their own. In order to finish training for this, Charlotte and Emily went to study in Brussels. As well as learning much, however, she fell in love with Monsieur Heger, the husband of the head of her school. No real relationship could ever develop, apart from friendship, and she left Brussels broken-hearted. This Experience provided the ideas for two of her books ââ¬Å"The Professorâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Villetteâ⬠. At the age of 38, Charlotte agreed to marry Arthur Bell Nicholls, a curate who assisted her father for many years and who had loved her for a very long time. She had rejected his affection in the past, but their marriage was successful and they developed a happy companionship so it was all the more tragic that she enjoyed it for only one year. She died in 1855 of complications arising from pregnancy. Her father, who had outlived all her children, had said that ââ¬Å"she was not strong enough/for marriageâ⬠. Bronte engages sympathy towards Jane because of the utilization of the first person by the narrator. ââ¬Å"I was glad of it: I never liked long walks. â⬠By using ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ the writer ensures that we see things and feel things from Janeââ¬â¢s point of view. We have empathy for her. Jane is made to feel isolated when the Reeds sit together and exclude her. ââ¬Å"The said Eliza, John, and Georgiana were now clustered round their mama in the drawing-roomâ⬠. Also, we feel compassion when Aunt Reed talks to her and tells her that she does not want her to be in with her own children since she was very rude when she was near her elders. Sympathy is engaged again when Jane goes to the breakfast-room alone because she was told to sit somewhere else and be silent until she could speak pleasantly. In the Breakfast room Jane finds a bookcase. Soon she was ââ¬Å"possessedâ⬠by a volume which she made sure should be one ââ¬Å"stored with picturesâ⬠. As she looked the book she describes the landscapes in the book are and the places where they may be found. The reader is completely on Janeââ¬â¢s side when John Reed verbally and physically abuses her. ââ¬Å"The volume was flung, it hit me, and I fell, striking my head against the door and cutting itâ⬠ââ¬Å"I felt him grasp my hair and my shoulderâ⬠. The reason for this is because of the brutality described. Jane tries to fight back but Miss Abbot and the nurse pull her away from John, and they hold her down. ââ¬Å"My impulse was to rise from it like a spring; their two pairs of hands arrested me instantly. â⬠Although John is bigger physically she still wants to attack him, because he said, she was less than a servant to him. â⬠Master! How is he my master? Am I a servant? â⬠ââ¬Å"No; you are less than a servant. â⬠Nobody is on Janeââ¬â¢s side, not even the servants. They all came to rescue John Reed from Jane. Again, our sympathy for Jane is reinforced. The sheer injustice of Janeââ¬â¢s circumstances gets our sympathy. Nobody accepts her version of events, even though Mrs. Reed is aware that John has been bullying Jane. ââ¬Å"He bullied and punished me; not two or three times in the week, nor once or twice in the day, but continually. â⬠ââ¬Å"Every nerve I had feared him, and every morsel of flesh in my body shrank when he came near. â⬠ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the servants did not like to offend their young master by taking my part against him and Mrs. Reed was blind and deaf in the subject: she never saw him strike or heard him abuse meâ⬠¦.. â⬠. Again, the readerââ¬â¢s sympathy is engaged when we hear that Bessie will tie Jane to a stool in the Red Room. ââ¬Å"If you donââ¬â¢t sit still, you must be tied down, said Bessie. â⬠This is a complete over-reaction. Abbot and Bessie talked about their opinions of Jane in front of her which is very rude. ââ¬Å"And you ought not to think yourself an equality with the Misses Reed and Master Reed, because Missis kindly allows you to be brought up with them. â⬠Jane describes the Red Room as being very grand but cold. She also states that it is not frequented by people much because Mr. Reed had died there nine years ago. ââ¬Å"Only the housemaid went there by herself on Saturdays, to wipe from the mirrors and furniture a weekââ¬â¢s quiet dust: and Mrs.Reed herself, at far intervals, visited it to review the contents of a certain secret drawer in the wardrobe, where were stored divers parchments, her jewel-casket, and a miniature of her diseased husband; and in those last words lies the secret of the red-room ââ¬â the spell which kept it so lonely in spite of its grandeur. â⬠Janeââ¬â¢s childish imagination is engaged when she realises she has been locked into this forbidding room. She sees herself in the mirror ââ¬â ghostly as she remembered Bessieââ¬â¢s stories about phantoms. Superstition is with Jane. We now hear Janeââ¬â¢s opinion about her unfortunate situation. Our compassion is with her as we hear her side of the story. ââ¬Å"John Reedââ¬â¢s violent tyrannies, all his sistersââ¬â¢ proud indifference, all his motherââ¬â¢s aversion, all the servantsââ¬â¢ partiality, turned up in my disturbed mind like a dark deposit in a turbid well. â⬠She talks about Johnââ¬â¢s behaviour and tells us that he has mentally affected her and this indicates that she would be more that happy to run away just for his sake. ââ¬Å"Georgiana, who had a spoiled temper, a very acrid spite, a captious and insolent carriage, was universally indulged. ââ¬Å"

polygamy in islam :: essays research papers
1. Definition of Polygamy Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types. One is polygyny where a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than one man. In Islam, limited polygyny is permitted; whereas polyandry is completely prohibited. Now coming to the original question, why is a man allowed to have more than one wife? 2. The Qur'an is the only religious scripture in the world that says,"marry only one". The Qur'an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase `marry only one'. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the Vedas, the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one can marry as many as one wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one. Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives. In earlier times, Christian men were permitted as many wives as they wished, since the Bible puts no restriction on the number of wives. It was only a few centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one. Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had three wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries continued the practice till as late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife. 3. Hindus are more polygynous than Muslims The report of the `Committee of The Status of Woman in Islam', published in 1975 mentions on page numbers 66 and 67 that the percentage of polygamous marriages between the years 1951 and 1961 was 5.06% among the Hindus and only 4.31% among the Muslims. According to Indian law only Muslim men are permitted to have more than one wife. It is illegal for any non-Muslim in India to have more than one wife.

Appearance in My Military Uniform
Wear and appearance of army uniform is critical in the military today for the shear fact that were are downsizing and the military is looking for every excuse to get rid of someone. Wear and appearance means to me is that you should be in the right uniform at times when instructed or permitted, is should be clean and serviceable and be to military standards. The reason i am writing tho essay y is i simply got lazy towards the exercise in Graf and i decided that packing my gear and others things where more important then my appearance in my military uniform. i decided not to shave and therefore that action i was confronted by another NCO, who then asked me if i had shaven this morningrning, knowing i was in the wrong i decided not to lie that would make the situation words then it really was. From there that NCO let my NCO know the situation and that is why I'm writing this essay today. ith that out the way my choice not to shave was more so and unprofessional decision that i had made when i did not backwards plan which is a good tact to practice because it helps you learn ways to fix and issue before it happens and your left looking stupid. So that morning when i woke i decided to get changed first , then proceeded to latrine to relieve myself, then proceeded to brush my teeth, i glanced at my face and simply thought in my head â⬠Aw no is hanna say shit there to busy thinking about getting homeâ⬠. hen i walked out of the latrine without a second thought to it. Its always the times when i think aww its cool I'm fine thats when the worst happens or something goes wrong. wear and tear and appearance of army uniform simply consist of you must be shaven at all time s when on duty or conducting a military function you are solider 24-7 you are supposed to have a serviceable uniform at all time when being worn you are to have a hair cut in according to regulation . hough some people do not follow this regulation it does not make it right for me not to. i join ed the military for a reason there are rules and regulations in the military if i want to be apart of this military i have to obey these reals and regulations so b me not following these rules this show that Im not committed to the military life so if I'm not committed why am i hear. I'm hear because i want a better life for me and m family and the military was the best way to start. so if i can't oxide by the rules and customs why should i stay. o therefore i should start living up to the military way and binding by there rules and customs. wear and appearance means to me is that you should look professional at all times. Army Regulation 670-1 covers the wear and appearance of military uniforms. Wearing the military uniform is a privilege that not everyone has earned, and it is our responsibility as soldiers to uphold this standard. In this essay I plan to cover different aspects of the regulation and why it is important to meet and maintain the standards which are set forth in the regulation. The purpose of Army Regulation 670-1 as stated in chapter 1 paragraph 1-1 is as follows. ââ¬Å"This regulation prescribes the authorization for wear, composition, and classification of uniforms, and the occasions for wearing all personal, clothing bag issue, optional, and commonly worn organizational Army uniforms. It also prescribes the awards, insignia, and accouterments authorized for wear on the uniform, and how these items are worn. General information is also provided on the authorized material, design, and uniform quality control system. The book answer to the purpose of the regulation only goes so far. If you look further into the regulation it states that the United States Army is a uniformed service that is judged, in part, by the way a soldier wears their uniform. This being said, if a soldier wears their uniform in a manner which is not clean and neat in appearance, and portrays the army poorly, the members of the United States Army would be viewed in a poor and undisciplined manner.Whereas if the members of the United States Army hold themselves to a higher standard, and maintain a neat and clean appearance, the members of the uniformed service will be viewed by the outside world as an organization which personifies what discipline is supposed to be. While we are on the subject of discipline, I think it would be good to explore it and itââ¬â¢s relation to the importance of Army Regulation 670-1. Discipline is one of the cornerstones of the United States Army. Discipline can set you above and beyond everyone else, and it can help you excel in everything you do.As stated in AR 670-1 Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia. The Army is a uniformed service where discipline is judged, in part, by the manner in which a soldier wears a prescribed uniform, as well as by the individualââ¬â¢s personal appearance. Therefore, a neat and well-groomed appearance by all soldiers is fundamental to the Army and contributes to building t he pride and esprit essential to an effective military force. A vital ingredient of the Armyââ¬â¢s strength and military effectiveness is the pride and self-discipline that American soldiers bring to their Service through a conservative military image. It is the responsibility of commanders to ensure that military personnel under their command present a neat and soldierly appearance. Therefore, in the absence of specific procedures or guidelines, commanders must determine a soldierââ¬â¢s compliance with standards in this regulation. Soldiers must take pride in their appearance at all times, in or out of uniform, on and off duty. Pride in appearance includes soldiersââ¬â¢ physical fitness and adherence to acceptable weight standards, in accordance with AR 600ââ¬â9. â⬠à By this, we can see the basic fundamentals and reasons behind the uniform policies that are currently in place. Therefore appearanc is everything in the military, perception is too if i look fucked up then people around me will assume that my NCO is fucked up then they will assume that my be your Chain Of Command is fucked up and shit does roll down hill. Look at it this way you come to work smelling like booze you've been up all night parting and and u just didn't care to iron you uniform or shave, nothing in the fact of the matter, you come into to work just looking trashed people will think that you just don't care about how you look of what people would think of you.

Free Verse Techniques Conveying Structure An Analysis of ââ¬Å"Springâ⬠By Edna St. Vincent Millay Composed in free verse, the poem ââ¬Å"Springâ⬠by Edna St. Vincent Millay contains many poetic elements that create a feeling of structure throughout. As free verse challenges the conventions of writing, so too, does St. Vincent Millayââ¬â¢s interpretation of Spring challenge societies conventional beliefs associated with the season. Millay uses various different poetic elements of writing as effective alternatives to conventional methods of prose such as use of quatrain, and an adherence to metric and rhyme schemes. Elevating itself from such conventions, Millayââ¬â¢s poem incorporates the use of personification, thought provoking questions, repetition,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This assumption is reinforced in the latter part of the poem, when Millay personifies ââ¬Å"Aprilâ⬠once more unsatisfied with the seasons return, stating ââ¬Å"April Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.â⬠(17-18) By again referring to the season of Spring as â⠬Å"April,â⬠(1,17) as well as associating the month with human characteristics and activities such as being an ââ¬Å"idiot,â⬠ââ¬Å"babbling,â⬠and ââ¬Å"strewing flowers,â⬠(18) the personification of Spring becomes even more clear. From this perspective, just as Spring cannot appease Millay with beauty or prospect of flowers, one cannot truly mend a broken relationship with words and gifts alone. The actions of ââ¬Å"babblingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"strewingâ⬠(18) are associated with ignorance, thus one can assume Millay is annoyed with the month of Spring, as people who receive flowers are most likely doing so because they have been annoyed or hurt by their significant other. Just as Spring continually returns, creating life ignorant of death, an annoying lover returns to a damaged heart, ignorant to the absence of love. Millay uses free verse elements, more specifically thought-provoking questions, to enhance the overall poetic feeling of ââ¬Å"Springâ⬠. Beginning with the proposal of a question, ââ¬Å"To what purpose, April, do you return again?â⬠(1) Millay blatantly challenges the reason behind natural order. Millay again does this when stating, ââ¬Å"It is

A P By John Updike - 1033 Words
People have to make choices every day, even without realizing it. No matter their background, this is something everybody has in common. Furthermore, how we face these decisions will have an impact in our lives, and sometimes the ones that seem to be small are the most important ones. John Updike understood how making decision affects peopleââ¬â¢s life, and he develops it in his short story ââ¬Å"A P,â⬠which is the story of an unhappy boy who quits his job for a pretty girl. In order to develop this theme, John Updike takes Sammy, the main character of the story, through three different stages. In the beginning stage, Sammy is just a boy who is not happy with his job, by the second stage, is shown as an idealistic who quits his job as a gesture of support to someone in need, although there is a hidden reason why he does so, and by the final stage he realizes that quitting his job was not a good idea, and regrets it. In the first stage, Sammy is presented as an arrogant cas hier clerk, who is taking care of a lady who is in her fifties, while three girls in bathing suits enter to the A P store where he works. In the first place, Sammy, Updikeââ¬â¢s character is shaken off by the girlsââ¬â¢ presence, what makes him make a mistake with the ladyââ¬â¢s groceries. As a result, the lady complains, so Sammy refers to the lady as ââ¬Å"a witch of about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrowsâ⬠(Updike 90), and also says that ââ¬Å"if sheââ¬â¢d been born at the right time they would have burned her overShow MoreRelatedA P By John Updike982 Words à |à 4 PagesThe story that this research paper is being written over is ââ¬Å"APâ⬠by John Updike.
